Bridal Looks from the Met Gala

At an event where you have to be personally invited by Anna Wintour, long standing Editor in Chief of US Vogue, the fashion is incredible – as you would expect.  Throw a theme into the mix, and the dress code is exponentially heightened.  This year’s theme, set by Wintour herself (of course), was ‘Fashion in the Age of Technology’.

As usual, it doesn’t matter if there were awards or what the fundraiser was, all I want to know is who was wearing what, and who was wearing whom.

And what an interesting theme!  Here are my favourite bridal looks from the Met Gala last week:

Layers

These 3 ladies did layers in their own very different ways.  The normally quite girly Kate Hudson mixes it up in a futuristic gown by Atelier Versace (left), and the normally quite grungy Lorde styles it out in a pretty Valentino number (middle).  I love the different dimensions Kate’s cut out pieces give to her gown, and I love the subtle prettiness the soft pastel hues give to Lorde’s look.  Jennifer Hudson wows in a stunning gown by H&M (right), which would not look out of place in one of Vera Wang’s catwalk collections.  Kudos to Jennifer, and budget brand H&M, for pulling this off beside the likes of Versace and Valentino.

Cut Out

This was a popular trend this year, with the most Instagram likes going to Kylie Jenner, however my favourites were Margot Robbie in Calvin Klein (left) and Karlie Kloss in Brandon Maxwell (right).  Both dresses were fabulously understated (compared to a lot of others), with Margot Robbie’s effortlessly chic.  Karlie Kloss had a little more skin on display than I would prefer for my own wedding, however the day to night transformation for the gala after party is just perfect.  Dare to bare for a tropical wedding somewhere on a beach; I’m imagining this dress at a chic wedding on the beaches of French Polynesia, since I’m typing this from my honeymoon, in my overwater bungalow on Moorea...!



Hollywood

Despite my love of the previous layered looks, I am much more into clean lines than princess dresses.  The Hollywood styles above are simple yet ooze Hollywood glamour.  Uma Thurman wears Tommy Hilfiger (left), Elle Fanning wears Thakoon (middle), and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wears Ralph Lauren (right).  These gowns, to me, are old Hollywood glamour reimagined; Uma’s dress has been modernised with an asymmetric delicate shoulder detail, Elle has accessorised with minimalist yet modern Tiffany jewellery, and Rosie’s one shouldered numbered has been given a futuristic edge with a spike of silver decoration.



Fashion in The Age of Technology

The award for most show stopping gown must go to Claire Danes, who wore a magical Zac Posen ball gown which was reminiscent of something from Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella combined (above).  The structure of this dress was perfection, however the moment the lights went down a magical sprinkle of tiny LED lights shone through and completely lit up the night (below).  It’s fair to say Claire totally nailed the theme with this one.  Imagine this transformation for your first dance at your wedding reception!
