Rachel and David’s Scottish country wedding was everything you would want your wedding to be – whimsical, warm, rustic, romantic, relaxed, and personal to them.
I wanted to start a section of ‘real weddings’ because it’s always the section I scroll to first! I’ve always found real weddings to be the most inspiring, so I thought I would start with my sister’s gorgeous wedding day, where I had the honour of being bridesmaid.
The couple didn’t have a theme of sorts, but everything about the day was handpicked and carefully curated by them. Using colour and natural materials throughout the day, to bind together perfectly through linking signature details, such as the wooden and floral arbour, the centre pieces and the cake table. Their colour scheme, although subtle, was well fitting to their rustic country setting, and this flowed naturally through the whole day. Having lived in London for over 10 years, the couple also used some aspects of their London life as discreet personal touches.
The Details
Rachel’s bouquet of soft blush and ivory roses, ivory stock, snowberries, eucalyptus and rosemary sprigs was mirrored in her hair, the soft tones were a striking and stunning contrast to her rich hair colour and complemented her relaxed updo.
Rachel’s attention to detail for the wedding started and ended with this dress – it was handmade by her. She is so talented and looked absolutely stunning in her own bespoke gown, even the humanist who married them mentioned it in the ceremony! The silk chiffon slip silhouette and layered train was made first, then embellished with lace sourced personally by Rachel while working in India. The lace was painstakingly cut into individual motifs and perfectly placed around the neckline and over the bodice to achieve the most stunning and flattering results. I think this was definitely the most time consuming and difficult part of the whole wedding for Rachel – she was still hand-sewing beads onto the dress 2 nights before the wedding! It was such a large job to take on, but after weeks and weeks of intricate work, it was absolutely worth it.

The Ceremony
The weather was surprisingly sunny for August in Scotland, so luckily they were able to have the ceremony outside, seating guests on handmade wooden benches, which the venue had upcycled from the byre’s original roof beams. They added their own details like a ‘pick a seat not a sign’ board, and a basket with pashminas in case the weather turned. The hanging bottles leading up the pathway were prepared and hung the day before, and Rachel personally decorated the ceremony arbour with flowers at 9am on the morning of the wedding!

The Cake(s)
Rachel and David are big foodies and couldn’t decide on what cake to get, so they ended up with 3! Opting for a more modern cake table, rather than a traditional tiered wedding cake, the cake pops and other little treats on were welcome additional luxuries that made the table look more relaxed and inviting.

The Reception
The reception was a gorgeous converted barn, but it was anything but shabby chic. The owners didn’t scrimp on anything when this venue was recently refurbished; they only started hosting weddings last summer and Rachel and David’s was one of the first weddings ever held there – this made the day all the more special. It was elegantly modern, but the original interior fittings still gave it a rustic and relaxed feel.
All inside decorations were handmade lovingly by the bride and groom. Rachel being the more handy, arranged splices of birch branches and decorated glass jars of all shapes and sizes with jute, twine and lace, which were then arranged in differing heights and filled with flowers and candles to give each centrepiece a unique composition. David designed all the graphics and printed details for the day from the outdoor signs to the table plan, to the menus. Their tables were named after London parks; they had a sweetheart table to themselves for dinner and named it after the park on their front doorstep in Islington.
Even their favours were home brewed and hand poured! Everyone on the day received a yummy (but potent) bottle of homemade raspberry vodka, which really helped get the party started later on!
