Trends from New York Bridal Week

Whether you are going for a quickie elopement, a full blown ballroom affair, or a three day weekend party, the catwalks were full of inspiring and captivating looks at the latest New York Bridal Week in October.  There was so much going on this year it was hard to pick my favourites, but there was something for every type of bride and every type of taste.  Here are some top trends spotted this year:

(Designers noted from left to right)

Texture:

Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, Reem Acra.

The catwalks were adorned with texture, it seems more is definitely more this season.  There was lots of variations, from embossed and patterned, to applique and bejewelled.

My favourite:
Reem Acra – so glamourous, I just love the sleeves; always a chic choice.

Best for:
A romantic wedding that pulls out all the stops.

Short:

Oscar de la Renta, Honor.

Having almost went for a short wedding dress myself, I absolutely adore these.  Super cute with just the right amount of elegance and sophistication – whilst not spoiling the fun.

My favourite:
Oscar de la Renta – the structure and streamlined shape really appeals to me, I particularly love this dress with this shoe pairing.

Best for:
A warm wedding abroad, or the party when you come back afterwards.

Separates:

Lela Rose, Carolina Herrera, Jenny Packham.

While separates are not new, they add a whole other dimension to bridal shapes and cuts and it’s so interesting to see how each designer does them differently.  The clean cut Carolina Herrera gown would be perfect for a spring/summer wedding, whilst the Lela Rose and Jenny Packham gowns have got all the texture and glamour going on for a sparkly winter wedding.  Just remember to ask for a gym membership as an engagement present…

My favourite:
Carolina Herrera – the simple shapes used here are ultra flattering and feminine.  Just work on your crunches!

Best for:
A modern bride having a cosmopolitan wedding.

Black & White Print:

Oscar de la Renta, Naeem Khan.

Super striking, these designs need a simple shape to balance them out.  They have an ‘80s feel about them, especially Naeem Khan’s off the shoulder number, but these are much more contemporary.  The Oscar de la Renta gown has modernised the look with the addition of pockets, and the Naeem Khan gown is less volume and more drape.

My favourite:
Oscar de la Renta can do no wrong with this classic and elegant shape.

Best for:
A black tie or ballroom celebration.  Imagine Grace Kelly’s elegance.

Metallic:

Zac Posen, Naeem Khan, Jenny Packham.

Sparkly and show stopping in every way, take your pick.  Glamourous?  Tick.  Shiny?  Tick.  Texture?  Tick.  Modern?  Tick.  Flattering?  Tick.

My favourite:
Has to be Jenny Packham, but only for a winter wedding.

Best for:
Glamourous brides channelling The Great Gatsby, or those not afraid to make a grand entrance.

Something Blue:

Carolina Herrera, Giulietta, Del Pozo.

Not for the faint hearted, there was a lovely wash of pale blue and duck egg on the catwalks this season.  The hues and tones were just delicate enough to be bridal, but totally transformed each gown into something more special.  Stand out from the crowd, and why not, it’s your wedding day!

My favourite:
Del Pozo – a welcome contrast to all the other shapes and details trending at Bridal Week.

Best for:
A city wedding, or a rehearsal dinner.

Deep V Choker:

Vera Wang, Jason Wu.

Not to be mistaken with a v-neck or plunging neckline, this is a definitive triangle shape framed with a choker neck.  The queen of bridal (Vera Wang) shows us how it’s done here, while Jason Wu presents a toned down, simplified version.

My favourite:
All hail Queen Vera

Best for:
Cool brides with small busts and great shoulders (not me, unfortunately – thanks Vera).

Follow your heart, too many cooks definitely spoil the bride when it comes to dress shopping (and weddings in general).  It doesn’t matter if your bridesmaid/cousin/mother in law doesn’t like it, it’s you that’s wearing it.
