Kensington Roof Gardens Wedding Event

The Roof Gardens is regularly frequented by every Sloany Pony I know, so I was keen to take a look when they hosted a wedding event last Saturday.  A Made in Chelsea favourite from the earlier episodes (Binky celebrated her 23rd birthday there in June 2013), it has since lost some of the ‘trendy’ crowd, but that’s no bad thing.

After a scorching summer, one of the few days it rained was last Saturday!  And what a pity!  The venue was absolutely stunning, but it would have been much better in the sunshine.

A 6th floor rooftop haven in bustling West London, a stone’s throw away from High St Kensington tube, The Roof Gardens is a restaurant (Babylon), private members club and events space.  From High St Ken station, take your first right then it’s a few doors down and into an unassuming lobby.  The building was formerly the Derry and Toms department store but now also houses fashionable LA gym Equinox, so the Roof Gardens has its own private lift.

Once on the roof, it is much bigger than you would imagine.  You are greeted by an open and airy versatile space, half penthouse half conservatory, looking out onto the gardens.

The gardens themselves sprawl over 6,000 square metres, and have lots of cute nooks to relax with a cocktail or two.  You don’t actually feel like you are in London as there is little view of the city, just gardens so bursting with life they look almost tropical and an array of wildlife – including a couple of flocks of ducks, and some pink flamingos!  Yes, really!  (This alone made it worth my while going along in the rain last week…!)  From the roof you have your pick of the Spanish Garden, the Tudor Garden, or the English Woodland, all of which sprawl into each other.  The roof is hired as one space, but with these different versatile areas to enhance each part of your day, it is much more than just a roof terrace.

The team were very flexible and hospitable (the venue is owned by Virgin – reportedly bought by a young Richard Branson in 1981 when he was refused entry because he didn’t meet the strict dress code), and the space was very relaxed.  My images don’t do it justice (due to the weather of course, nothing to do with my amateur photography…!) but hopefully this gives you a taster.

And who wouldn’t want actual pink flamingos as part of their wedding party?!  Just think of the wedding photos!
